Falls guide and tours.
The two Falls
Niagara Falls.
After two days in New York City with the Hurricane and 6 inches of rain we were ready to head out of town.
We then had a marvellous round trip of New England, covering nearly 2000 miles.
Day 1 was from Newark in New Jersey, through New York city via the George Washington Bridge, up through Connecticut to Providence, Rhode Island. From there we travelled south to Cape Cod, which is actually an island, not a cape. It was very beautiful and a tourist area.
Day 2 took us back to Providence and to a pre marriage barbeque at the home of Don and Kathy Wells, for their daughters wedding next day. It was alovely setting in their nice garden, and a lovely family. As the groom was Scottish the Scots contingent all stayed at a local motel.
Day 3 was the Wells-Gibb wedding with a lunchtime church ceremony in Providence, followed by a half hour journey down the motorway(Interstate 95), to a RI university conference centre deep in the forest, with excellent accommodation in wooded luxury. Then followed an afternoon of drinks and snacks before the evening marriage dinner with all the speeches. A late bonfire finished off the day.
Day 4 was breakfast followed by a return to Providence to open the presents. We then headed north through New Hampshire to Maine where we eventually reached Portland. The trees were beautiful and beginning to change colour for the fall. Here we sent a postcard to our American cousin in Portland(Oregon!!)
Day 5. Now we were to head west into the White Mountains with eastern Americas highest peak, mount Washington, at well over 6000 feet. We think we saw it from a vantage point, but the rain had started. We carried on in driving rain until mid afternoon when we reached North Conway. As luck would have it, we found a large group of Outlet Factories!! before our motel.
Day 6 and we continued west in beautiful sunshine and lovely trees until heavy rain about lunchtime. Decided to go off the interstate at a town or city called Lee. Again we hit factory outlets before the town. Lee produces a very strong type of white marble as demonstrated by the beautiful Library building. This marble has been used in a White House extension building wing.
Day 7 and we now headed for Buffalo and Niagara City to see the famous Falls and to compare them with Victoria Falls in Africa. We found a motel within walking distance of both the Falls and Canada, and had an late afternoon stroll down to see the spectacle. The rapids on the American side were breathtaking as they were almost at eye level. The photos of the Falls speak for themselves. Magnificent.
Day 8 found us on a sightseeing tour with four other people with the excellent tour guide Nick, and we visited both sides of the falls and a trip up the 600+ feet viewing tower in Canada. Also visited the Canadian Horticultural College gardens-very interesting.
Day 9 Heading south now, beautiful countryside and marvellous views from the high road levels. Got lost in Scransford, so kept going and soon found an Econolodge.
Day 10 travelled back to Newark.
Last two days were spent in New York City, sightseeing.
